Mangalore, Sep 24: A tense atmosphere prevailed at Vamanjoor on the outskirts of the city after a budding rowdy attempted to murder a youth on Wednesday.

BJP activist Santosh Kottary (30), who sustained severe injuries in alleged murder attempt, has been admitted to a private hospital in the city. He is the brother of local BJP leader Rajesh Kottary.

It is learnt that two youth who came on a motorbike waylaid Kottary and one among them attacked him with a sharp weapon. The duo fled the scene even before crowd began to gather.

Sources identified the assailant as Pawan(20), son of rowdy sheeter Vamanjoor Rohi, who was hacked to death in 2009.

Sources said that Pawan has been engaged in rowdyism after being sacked by St Raymond's PU College a couple of years ago. He also had threatened to kill a lecturer, it is said.

The exact reason for the murder attempt is not yet known. However, it is suspected that old animosity between two groups might be the reason behind the attack. Unconfirmed sources said that Kottary was involved in Vamanjoor Rohi murder case. More details awaited.
