Addressing a programme at the Mysore city Congress office MLA Vasu lamented that history is now being twisted to damage the image of Tipu. “Such modification of historical facts, with an intention to send a wrong message to the public, is wrong,” he said. He added that such incidents widen the gulf between communities.

Recalling Tipu's relationship with various Hindu temples in the region, he said, such gestures show that Tipu was tolerant to all religions and tried to ensure harmonious relations among them.

MLA M K Somashekar recalled the contributions of the Tiger of Mysore during the freedom struggle. “Tipu sacrificed his life fighting against the British. His dedication and sacrifice should be an inspiration to the youth,” he said.

Tipu was among the first to take up arms against the British. He even sacrificed his two children for the cause of the country, he said.

A separate memorial service for Tipu Sultan was held at Ganjam, near Srirangapatna, Mandya district on the same day.

Several religious ceremonies were held at the venue, in the presence of MLA and Tipu Wakf Estate president Tanveer Sait. A service was also held at the place where the body of Tipu was found.

According to historians, Tipu was the only king in the history of world who died on the battlefield fighting the enemies of the country.
