Mangaluru, Nov 8: Congress leader and MLC Ivan D'Souza has attracted the wrath of Bharatiya Janaya Party leaders and media after pulling an unrelated woman into the controversy triggered by the insensitive' tongue of former deputy chief minister K S Eshwrappa.
Eshwarappa, who is the leader of opposition in Vidhana Parishad, on Friday had stated that chief minister and home minister might take action against rapists only when 'their daughters get raped'. Provoked by this remark Mr D'Souza hit back with a similar statement at a press meet in the city on Saturday, thereby stirring up a fresh controversy on the same issue.
Mr D'Souza said that Eshwarappa had no morality and decency to make such remarks. “This is not political culture. His remarks are an insult to the dignity of the state,” he said.
However, in his haste to condemn the opposition leader, Mr D'Souza dropped a bomb-shell by asking what would happen if he questioned if Eshwarappa's wife would be sexually assaulted.
He urged that the opposition leader should tender an unconditional apology for targeting the chief minister and home minister through his remarks, or resign from his post for trying to defame them. He also warned of filing a complaint against Mr Eshwarappa over his remarks to the court.
Meanwhile, regional television channels and BJP leaders in Karnataka lambasted Mr D'Souza for pulling Eshwarappa's wife into rape controversy through an undiplomatic remark.
