Mangalore, Apr 26: A case has been registered against six persons including Bantwal town municipal council member Mohammed Shareef on charges of vandalizing the toll plaza and equipment at Brahmarakootlu on Bangalore-Mangalore national highway on Saturday.

Since the equipment including computer systems at the toll booths have been damaged beyond repair, the toll collection at the toll gate has been temporarily suspended.

According to the complaint lodged at Bantwal town police station, a group of nearly 25 persons including Mohammed Shareef, Shakeer, Palla Adam, Azeez and Sameer Salim came in three auto rickshaws, two four-wheelers and over 10 two-wheelers at the toll plaza on Saturday and began vandalizing the place for collecting exorbitant rates as toll fee for passing vehicles. It is said that damages worth over Rs 10 lakhs were caused due to the vandalism.

It is said that TMC member Mohammed Shareef began an argument with the staff collecting the toll fee over a petty reason. In the argument, the toll collection staff were said to have behaved in an unruly manner, following which the group arrived and began vandalizing the plaza.

The glass panes were shattered by the group of men, while equipment such as CCTV cameras, computers and chairs were also broken. It is also learnt that the toll plaza manager Shivakumar and other staff were assaulted by the same group of people.

In the ensuing melee, Rs 1 lakh in cash collected by the toll gate staff was also snatched from the toll counter, according to the complaint filed by Shivakumar.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa visited the spot and began enquiries. Bantwal police have registered a case.

It is also learnt that few Bajrang Dal activists arrived at the spot following the vandalism and reportedly used foul language against DySP Rashmi Paradi when she tried to control the situation.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
