Mangaluru, Jun 25: Even as the torrential rains continued to unleash its fury in coastal Karnataka, a prominent bridge over River Phalguni at Mularpatna village on the outskirts of the city collapsed today.
Authorities said that the bridge was razed to the ground after its columns were destroyed by debris carried in the fast-flowing river. Fortunately, there was no vehicle or pedestrian on the ill-fated bridge when the tragedy took place.
The bridge was one of the connection points between Mangaluru and Bwantwal. It connected Bantwal with Kuppe Padavu Kaikakmba, Kateel, Iruvail, Edapadavu, Ganjmutt and Surathkal via Sornadu. The collapse of the bridge has badly affected connectivity in the region.
While some locals have accused the government of failing to maintain the bridge, others have held relentless sand mining responsible for the tragedy. More details are awaited.
