Torrential rains claim 13 lives in two days across Kerala

Kasaragod, Jun 11: Heavy rain continued to lash many parts of Kerala on Monday, causing widespread damage. Unofficial reports said that at least 13 people have died in rain-related incidents over two days in the state.

On Sunday, five deaths from drowning and electrocution were reported in Wayanad, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram. The Met centre in Thiruvananthapuram has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday.

Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, moderate rain lashed the city on Sunday, keeping the weekend weather cool and cloudy. Barring a tree fall reported in Yeswanthpur, no complaints were received at the BBMP control room.

The traffic police along with local residents cleared the tree to avoid a block. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, the average rainfall recorded on Sunday till 9.30 pm was 3.08 mm.

The maximum temperature in several parts of northern India remained close to normal.

In north India, moderate rainfall in Rajasthan brought relief to people battling the sweltering heat in the desert state. With a maximum of 41.2 degrees Celsius,Jaisalmer was the hottest place in the state, followed by Barmer (40.9 C).

Dust storms and thunderstorms are likely to occur at a few places in east Rajasthan on Monday, the official said.

However, the day temperature in Delhi during the morning hours dropped several notches, a day after a sudden dust storm hit the national capital. The maximum temperature was recorded at 38.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below the average.

The weather office in Lucknow said rain and thunderstorm are “very likely” at a few places over eastern Uttar Pradesh. The day temperature has increased in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow and Bareilly.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
