Mangaluru, May 31: The police have arrested two persons on charge of spreading a fake WhatsApp message claiming that BJP activists once again attacked churches in Mangaluru after seven of the eight assembly seats in Dakshina Kannada were won by the saffron party candidates in recent polls.
The arrested have been identified as Sunil Vegas (34) and Sachit P.P. (23), both hailing from Chikkamagaluru. They have been booked under Section 153 (a) and 507 of the Indian Penal Code.
After the fake message and misleading photos and old videos went viral on social media, the city police had suo motu registered a case and warned of legal action against those forward such provocative messages.
The video of police action at a church in the city in 2009 was also among the messages that were circulated as ones occurring on May 15, the day Assembly election results were declared.
Vipul Kumar, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner, had asked Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central) to investigate the case. The police on Wednesday managed to arrest the two suspects from Chikkamagaluru.
