Two families lose five little children in two similar drowning incidents

Mangalore, Jul 20: The weekend is riddle with tragedy in Dakshina Kananda. Five children belonging to two families drowned in two separate incidents within the districts on Sunday.

Vasu Shetty and Seeta couple residing at Mijar, Yadapadavu lost their three children who were playing near their house.

All three children drowned in a pond at quarry located near their house. The deceased have been identified as Pranesh (12), Meghashree (11) and Yakshita (6).

The incident came to light when the mother Seeta went searching for her children who did not return home even after long time.

To her horror she found the footwear of her children near the pond. She also found the signs of children entering the pond.

A few local residents who dived into the pond managed to bring all three children out of the water. However, they reportedly breathed their lost, on the way to hospital.

Sleuths from jurisdictional Bajpe Police Station visited the spot and registered a case.

In a separate but similar incident reported at Malady village in Belvai near Moodbidri, two girl children drowned while playing near a pond at a quarry.

The deceased siblings have been identified as Suraksha (7) and Sukanya (4), children of Suresh and Seeta couple.

The little girls were playing outside their house on Sunday morning. But, at around 12:00 noon the parents realized that the girls were missing.

When they grew suspicious and searched in the pond they found tow dead bodies. Firefighters from Moodbidri rushed to the spot. A case has been registered at Moodbidri police station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
