Kasaragod, Sept 4: The police here have arrested two people in connection with the smuggling of 1.2 kg of 24 carat gold to the tune of Rs. 38 lakh from a Gulf country.
On a tip off, a team led by Kasaragod Town Police Principal Sub-Inspector P. Ajithkumar on Sunday evening arrested Abdul Shahid, 25, a resident of Nellikkunnu here, and Shamir, 30, from Vidyanagar here.
The arrest was made when Shahid was handing over the gold made into thin layers, coated with mercury and concealed in a thermo flask was being handed over to Shameer on the new bus station premises here.
They have been charged under the provisions of Cr.PC 102 (seizure of suspected stolen property) and were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here.
They were later released on bail.
The court had asked them to produce valid documents and remit the tax and fine amount. Otherwise, the gold would be vested with the authorities concerned, Mr. Ajithkumar said.
