Manipal, Oct 18: At least two persons lost their lives and nearly two dozen people sustained injuries in a collision between a private bus and an auto-rickshaw near Nitte village of Karkala taluk in Udupi district on Friday.
According to the police, the bus was on its way from Karkala to Padubidri when the collision took place at Manjalpade near Nitte. As a result, the bus and the autorickshaw fell into a ditch.
Two passengers in the autorickshaw, Jameela (60) and Neha (9), were severely injured. However, Neha died in a hospital in Karkala and Jameela died in a hospital in Udupi. Both were residents of Hejmady Kodi village and were going to a wedding in Karkala with four others in the autorickshaw.
The bus driver and the autorickshaw driver were also injured in the accident, the police said.
K. Annamalai, Assistant Superintendent of Police, said that nearly 20 bus passengers who were injured were receiving medical treatment in hospitals in Udupi and Karkala. œThe bus driver veered from his lane and this resulted in the accident, he said.
A case had been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station. Investigation is on, the police said.
