Udupi, Oct 27: Three persons died on the spot and three others suffered critical injuries after a speeding ambulance jumped the road median and collided with a tanker on national highway 66 at Kota Manuru in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Ullas Talekar (48), his relative Ashok (37) and Shailesh. Three others – Arvind, Sarita and Raghavendra – who suffered injuries, are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The tragedy occurred when the ambulance, belonging to St Mother Teresa Hospital, was carrying Ullal Talekar, who was suffering from heart ailment, from Karwar to A J Hospital in Mangaluru.
It is learnt that due to the over-speed, the driver lost control over the ambulance at Kota Manuru. A speeding bullet tanker crushed the ill-fated ambulance within a second after it jumped the median and landed on the other side of the road.
The ambulance had six persons including the patient. The driver of the ambulance miraculously escaped with minor injuries.
A case was registered at Kota police station and investigations are on.
