Udupi, Aug 14: Torrential rains that lashed coastal Karnataka on Tuesday accompanied by winds destroyed or damaged around 65 houses in Udupi district alone while a man was drowned or went missing in the Varahi river canal.
Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, said that Shankar Poojary, 50, was washed away in the Varahi waters at Siddapura village and efforts were on to trace him.
Houses and fields in the low-lying areas of the district were flooded in villages including Uppoor, Havanje, Haklady, Barangady, Hadavu, Salbuda, Gulvady, Kavarady, Halnad, Badakere, Bagu, Padukone, Senapura, Navunda, Arehole, and Konki.
People from many of these areas were evacuated to safer places and put up in Ganji Kendras at Tallur, Haklady, and Gulvady. “Over 100 people had their food in these kendras. Many had left to their homes where the flood waters receded,” Ms. Francis said. Rivers including Varahi, Kubja, Chakra, Khetaki, Souparnika, Swarna, and Sita were in spate. As many as 64 properties were damaged across the district.
Over 20 houses in villages including Kukkundur, Mala, Miyar, Mudar, Kadtala, Kasaba, and Shirlal were damaged, while a school building and fields were damaged at Kukkundur in Karkala taluk.
Six houses were damaged in Kundapur taluk. Eighteen houses were damaged in Udupi taluk. Four houses were damaged in Brahmavar taluk. Nine houses were damaged in Kaup taluk.
Water from the Kubja entered the sanctum sanctorum of the Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kamalashile, while water from Bhasmakunda rivulet entered the Sri Brahmalingeshwara Temple at Maranakatte.
In the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Udupi received 155.3 mm rainfall, while Kundapur and Karkala towns received 223.9 mm and 152.1 mm rainfall, respectively.
