Udupi, Aug 25: Kota Srinivas Poojary, Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Legislative Council released the manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) polls, here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion Udupi MLA K Raghupati Bhat said that if voted to power, the BJP would reduce the trade permit fee to Rs 500 in the first meeting of the CMC instead of the present system which was based on square feet.

It would improve the functioning of street lamps. A system would be put in place to repair street lamps within 48 hours of any complaint. Leak-proof manholes would be constructed and all wet wells would be concreted.

The underground drainage system would be extended to areas such as Manipal, Malpe and Santhekatte. The scheme to bring drinking water from the Varahi to Udupi would be redrawn and villages en route would be provided treated water.

A fee of Rs. 30 would be charged for door-to-door collection of waste in the city and Stree Shakti women self-help groups would be involved in this exercise. All important roads would be widened in the city, including the Manipal-Ambagilu Road, Manipal-Industrial Area Road, Beedinagudde-Alevoor Road and Brahmagiri-Bannanje Road.

The National Highway 169A would be widened from Malpe beach to Parkala. A modern market would be constructed in the place of the present Visvesvaraya Market in the heart of the city with parking facility in the basement.

Fish markets for women would be constructed in wards wherever necessary. This would help in making fisherwomen self-employed. The health insurance coverage to families belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would be increased from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh in the city.

Public ponds in the city would be developed on priority with the help of Minor Irrigation and Urban Development departments. A Zilla Ranga Mandir would be constructed.

A single complex would be built to include both the KSRTC City Bus Stand and the Private City Bus Stand, and a multiple parking complex would be constructed nearby to solve vehicle parking problem.

The Padukere beach would be developed. A new cricket stadium along with an open air theatre would be built at Beedinagudde. Residential flats would be constructed under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana for the urban poor, he said.

‘Congress failures’

Meanwhile, BJP Udupi district unit president Mattar Ratnakar Hegde released a brochure detailing the failures of the Congress rule in the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) in the last five years.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhat said said that the Congress rule in the CMC was marked by non-governance and corruption. The Congress had failed to solve the problems of drinking water and underground drainage system and maintenance of street lamps. “People had to approach touts and pay commission to get their work done in the CMC,” he said.

Mr Bhat said the CMC had failed to maintain cleanliness in the city and ensure proper maintenance on the Malpe beach. Hardly, any roads had been widened in the city in the last five years.

Whenever the Congress was in power in the CMC, there had been poor governance, and whenever the BJP ruled, there had been development, Mr Bhat said.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
