Udupi CMC polls: Congress manifesto promises clean, green city; more jobs

Udupi, Aug 26: A day after Bhratiya Janata Party released its manifesto for looming Udupi City Municipal Council polls, the ruling Congress on Saturday released its fresh manifesto promising a clean and green city.

The manifesto was formally released by Gundu Rao, president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dinesh Gundu Rao here. Pratapchandra Shetty, Ivan D’Souza, MLCs, Pramod Madhwaraj, Gopal Bhandary, Vinaykumar Sorake, former MLAs, Janardhan Tonse, president of the District Congress Committee, were present.

The manifesto focuses on getting water from the Varahi to the Baje dam near Udupi to meet the drinking water needs of the city during summer. It assures people of improving the underground drainage system by upgrading it and extending it. To make Udupi clean and green, more gardens would be developed and more trees would be grown. Tanks would be developed in the city to increase groundwater level, and rainwater harvesting would be encouraged.

Efforts would be made to set up a Skill Development Centre in the city to train youth to become self-employed. More Information Technology companies and BPOs would be encouraged to set up their units in the city so that they could provide jobs to the youth.

Quarters would be constructed for civic employees on the District Office Road. The widening work of Manipal-Perampalli Road would be completed, while the Malpe-Santhekatte Road would be widened. The Visvesvaraya Market located in the heart of the city would be developed as a modern shopping mall.

A new building for the CMC would be constructed on the Old Taluk Office premises. All facilities in the CMC would be fully computerised. A Yoga and Physiotherapy Centre would be constructed at Ajjarkad for the sake of economically backward people. Hi-tech public toilets would be constructed in all 35 wards.

Parking facilities would be improved within the city along with better maintenance of traffic signals and street lamps. The programme of LED lamps to save power in the city would be completed.

Hi-tech bus stands would be constructed in Udupi, Manipal and Malpe under the Department of Urban Land Transport scheme. The work on the government city bus stand to accommodate low-floor buses would be expedited. The project to build a KSRTC Inter-District Bus Stand at Bannanje would also be expedited, according to the manifesto.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
