Udupi: Jeweller robbed of gold worth Rs 40 lakh, Rs 2.57 lakh in cash

Udupi, Mar 18: A jeweller was robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs. 40 lakh and cash of Rs. 2.57 lakh near Hiriyakda in Udupi district on Friday night.

According to the police, Dilip T.D., from Thrissur, used to bring gold ornaments from Thrissur to sell in jewellery shops in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Dilip had left Thrissur with 2 kg of gold ornaments on Thursday night. He was carrying the ornaments in his jacket. He sold a total of 500 g of ornaments at jewellery stores in Mangaluru, Moodabidri, Perdoor and Hiriyadka on Friday.

After selling ornaments of 35 g at a shop in Hiriyadka, he collected the previous outstanding amount of Rs. 2.57 lakh from there and boarded a bus from Hiriyadka to Manipal.

In the bus at Hiriyadka, a man came up to him claiming he was from the Police Department. He demanded that Dilip hand the valuables over. When Dilip started shouting, two others joined the man. They got Dilip off the bus and into a car.

Three more people were in the car. The gang showed him an object resembling a pistol and took away the 1.5 kg of gold ornaments from him. The gold was estimated to cost Rs. 40 lakh. They also took away cash he was carrying, left him near Padubidri and escaped.

A case had been registered at Hiriyadka police station on Saturday and investigations are on.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The presidential address was delivered by the esteemed Chairman of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, Dr. Haji S. M. Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.
