Udupi, Mar 21: The Udupi district police have arrested a person on the charge of kidnapping and raping his niece at Hosadurga in Chitradurga district.

Sunil Naik, Circle Police Inspector, said that the accused used to visit his 22-year-old niece in Chitradurga. He befriended her and later took her to Chikkamagaluru and Bengaluru in March 2014, where he sexually assaulted her. When she became pregnant he left her back in Chitradurga.
Fearing being ostracised, she came to Karkala in October 2014, where a temple priest sympathised with her and arranged her delivery in Hubballi.
When she returned to Karkala with the child, someone lodged a complaint with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
The mother and child were shifted to the State Home at Nittur here. A case was registered under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape).
The police arrested Thirumalesha in Hosadurga on March 18, and produced him before court in Karkala on March 19, which remanded him in judicial custody till April 1.
