Udupi: Marine Police Training Centre to come up on 25-acre site at Kodibengre

Manipal, May 4: Deputy Commissioner Dr Vishal R has announced that a full-fledged State Marine Police Training Centre would be opened on a 24.90-acre site at Kodibengre in Udupi district.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, the DC that the centre would solve the problem of dearth of security for the sea coast.

“The proposal is under government ratification. Reliable records have been submitted to the government, as the land comes under the CRZ area. The coastal police will be trained with sophisticated technical skills in the centre to enhance the quality of their work,” he explained.

Dr Vishal added that 2.50 acres of land, which was under consideration to be handed over to KSRTC in Mudanidambur, is finally transferred from the PWD to the KSRTC. A 1.12-acre KSRTC site at Ajjarkadu has, in turn, been handed over to the PWD for construction of quarter, he explained.

He said 63 permits are granted for 23 sand blocks in the CRZ area in the district. The sand mining process in non-CRZ area is stopped for the time being as the issue in court. Of the 11 non-CRZ blocks, two are given to IRB for construction of national highways.

“Plans have been chalked out for construction of a comprehensive district library on 20 cents of land adjacent to the Town Hall at a cost of Rs 5.18 crore. The library would have a basement, and ground, first and second floors. The basement would comprise parking area and storeroom, while the ground floor comprises central library and a reading room. The first floor would comprise the district library and a reading room. The second floor comprises training centre for competitive exams and also a browsing centre,” he described.

The funds are released from the Urban Development Authority, Library Department, CSR, MP and MLA funds. There is already Rs three crore, while another 2.18 crore would be arranged shortly. The library would take 15-18 months for the completion, said Dr Vishal.

The Deputy Commissioner added that there are two sub-divisions of the district library operating at Mannupalla and at Bailur. “Two more would be added to the list, one at Kundapur at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh and another at Saligrama at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. The blue print of the cost estimation is underway,” he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
