Udupi police recover stolen articles worth Rs. 49.21 lakh

Udupi: Dec 29: The Udupi police have recovered gold, silver articles and cash worth Rs 49,21,765 in connection with the cases reported between January 1, 2015 and December 28, 2015.

Two ancient bronze idols dating back to the 17th century were part of the stolen items exhibited by the police here on Tuesday.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Santosh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, said that the idols of Lord Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavati were confiscated when they raided a room in a lodge here on October 27, 2014. The police had arrested six persons for trying to sell these idols. The accused were later released on bail.

The police had sent these idols to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to ascertain its antiquity. The ASI had in its report on December 7 stated that the idols dated back to the 17th century and were of antique value. The police had posted the pictures of these idols on the social media so that the owners came forward to claim it, he said.

Mr. Kumar said that items, whose worth was estimated Rs. 2.24 core were stolen from different parts of the district from January 1 to December 28.

Of these, the police had handed over products and goods worth Rs. 16.83 lakh to their respective owners.

In Udupi police sub-division, 11 motor pumps, one lorry, one car, 28 mobile telephone sets, five motorcycles, five laptops, 4,000 granite slabs, two gold bangles, three gold necklaces, one gold earrings, one gold ring, one gold bar, and cash Rs. 2.22 lakh had been recovered by the police during the year.

The police had recovered one gold bar, four pairs of gold earrings, one gold ring, one LED television set, arecanut worth Rs. 2 lakh, two idols, one brass utensil, two motor pumps, 11 motorcycles, one CCTV camera set, 400 metres of cable wire, and cash Rs. 75,000 in Karkala Police Sub Division.

In Kundapur police sub-division, the items recovered by the police included four quintals of cashewnut, two handycams, 45 mobile telephone sets, one motorcycle, 29 bags of arecanut, electronic goods of Rs. 3 lakh, one gold necklace, and cash Rs. 3,400, Mr. Kumar said.
