Udupi police seek body warrant in second case on Bannanje Raja

September 8, 2015

Udupi , Sep 8: The Udupi police have sought a body warrant to investigate the second case, regarding of the extortion calls made to Anand Shetty, a business man from Santhekatte by underworld don Bannanje Raja.

Bannanje Raja
The police produced the don before the Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday.

The Assistant Public Prosecutor Shantibai said that the police had sought the body warrant for the second case as they had to produce the accused in the first case wherein the police custody ended on Monday.

The first case was related to murder attempt of Irody Padmanabha Acharya and theft at Irody Jewellers in 2011.

The police have also moved the appeal for shifting the accused to Hiriyadka Jail for 24 hours. The counsel for Bannanje Raja, Amar Correa, argued that the accused should be shifted to Hindalga Jail, citing reason of insufficient security at Hiriyadka.

Shantibai said that the expense and the duration of time to send the accused to Belagavi Jail would not be viable as the government would have to spend too much on man power. He should be produced before the court again on Tuesday, which would not be possible if the travel was on road, she explained. “The police custody ended on September 7 for the Irody theft case. As per law, the accused should be sent to Belagavi Jail, which was not practically possible. The conditions under the extradition office would not be applied for Bannanje Raja as the custody was sought by the Indian Police, which had led them to seek judicial custody for the accused and get him shifted to Hiriyadka Jail. The court has consented to the appeal, and has remanded the accused in judicial custody for 24 hours, the period ending 11 am on Tuesday,” Shantibai added.

SP Annamalai said that to get the consistency in the four cases to be interrogated in Udupi, the police were seeking the body warrant one after another. “There are leads which will be cross-checked. There are cases against him in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Shivamogga,” said the official.

Amar Correa said that the body warrant could not be issued once the accused was sent to police custody.

The legal provision contemplates that, then, the accused should be produced before court and no body warrant could be sought.

The underworld don would, however, be produced again before court for the second case to be handled in Udupi, related to the extortion calls to Anand Shetty and an attempt at robbery.

Police sources said that the incident took place on September 26, 2013.

The accused in the case include Mohammed Maqsood, Mohammed Haneef, Sachin Poojary, Shamsuddhin, Sayeed Buran, Bannanje Raja, Sameer and Siraj Hassan, of whom, six, including Raja have been arrested. Sameer and Hassan are absconding, and, the preliminary investigation presents suspicion of them being in Dubai.

The investigators have ascertained that threat calls were made to Anand Shetty.

A case, however, was not filed in connection with the calls, but only for the theft attempt that took place at 5 am the same day.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
