Udupi: Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurates Malpe - Padukere bridge

Udupi, Mar 18: Fulfilling a long pending demand of the residents of Malpe-Padukere, Pramod Madhwaraj, Udupi district in-charge minister on Saturday dedicated the bridge connecting Malpe with Padukere for public.

Built at a cost of Rs 16.91 crore, the bridge not only gives people easy access to beach at Padukere but also opens up tourism potential of the region.

Asserting that Padukere beach will be developed on lines of Malpe beach as one of the most attractive beaches in India, the minister said its development and maintenance will be handed over to the Malpe Beach Development Committee.

To aid locals and tourists reach the place, three JnNurm buses will be deployed between Padukere and Malpe, he said, exhorting the locals and the beach development committee to exploit its potential to the hilt.

The district has received Rs 77.50 crore for construction of bridges since I became a minister, Pramod said. A sum of Rs 320 crore has been sanctioned for setting up UGD network in Malpe and providing it with 24-hours water supply.

The government has also allocated Rs 4.60 crore for the construction of a hi-tech bus station at Malpe, he said, adding the state government is committed to ensuring the overall development of all parts of the district.

Referring to the fisheries department that he heads in the Siddaramaiah government, Pramod said the government has allocated Rs 157 crore to provide subsidy on diesel used by fishermen in this year's budget.

The government will take steps to provide subsidy to even those fishermen who do not have a bank account from April 1, he said adding the department has been allocated Rs 337 crore in the budget. Meenakshi Madhav Bannaje, Udupi CMC president, was present.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
