Udupi set to become tobacco-free district

Udupi, Mar 19: The police department has decided to strictly enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition) Act-2003, in the district on an experimental basis with the aim of making Udupi a tobacco-free district. In order to achieve this, the cooperation of all citizens is necessary, said COTPA Act Special Nodal Officer Dr John.

Delivering the keynote address at a special programme for implementation of COTPA Act organised by Udupi District Police at the taluk panchayat auditorium here recently, he said that Gadag had already been declared a tobacco-free district in the state. In a survey conducted in Udupi district, it was found that since the implementation of COTPA Act in Udupi in January, nearly 75 percent of the tobacco consumers had stopped their habit, he said.

He said that the implementation of the Act was not merely the responsibility of the police department but it was the duty of all the governmental departments. Several provisions such as removal of tobacco hoardings, ban on sale of tobacco products in proximity of schools and colleges, setting up awareness banners on harmful effects of tobacco, awareness on fine for smoking and littering in public among others are being implemented in the district with the aim of making it tobacco-free, he informed.

He also said that over 10 lakh people in tbe country were dying annually due to tobacco use. Around 60,000 people were dying due to this every year in Karnataka. It has been reported that every day, around 20 persons succumbed to death from the ill-effects of tobacco, he said.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
