Udupi, Jan 28: Sleuths of the Department of Forests successfully caught a leopardess at Gundupade in Pernankila village in Udupi taluk and later released into the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in the district.

A cage was laid to trap the wild cat three days ago after the residents of Gundupade village lodged a complaint with the Department of Forests that a leopard was roaming around.
In one section of the cage, they had kept a dog as bait to attract the wild cat near the house of Philomena Pinto, a farmer.
While nothing got trapped on the first day, the people of the areas found that the leopardess had entered the cage and got trapped in it around 7 a.m. on Friday.
They then informed the department about it. The personnel of the department took the leopardess away and left into the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary.
Cliffard Lobo, Range Forest Officer, Udupi Range, told The Hindu that the leopardess was aged about three to four years and was healthy. The Nekkare Gudde Reserve Forest was close to Gundupade. The leopards strayed out from the reserve forest during the nights in search of food.
“Normally leopards lived in the periphery of forests so that they could catch their prey. They relish dogs. After catching their prey, they returned to the forests,” he said.
