Mangaluru, Mar 8: A local court has sentenced a youth to 20 year imprisonment in connection with a violent clash occurred more than three years ago near Syed Madani Dargah in Ullal.

The case relates to a clash between two quarrelsome factions among the devotees of Ullal Dargah. Around eight people had sustained injuries in the violent clash during Friday prayer on October 18, 2013.
A dispute between the then management committee of Ullal Dargah and newly constructed Muhiuddeen Juma Masjid at Melangady near Dargah was the reason for the clash. The Dargah committee had asked the new mosque committee not to organise juma prayers.
However, the new mosque committee had gone ahead with their plan to host juma prayers. When people gathered for juma, the supporters of another group tried to attack them. According to charge sheet lethal weapons were also used by some miscreants.
Police had arrested ten persons including Imthiyaz for violence. The judge convicted Imthiyaz for offences under section 307 of IPC and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for each offense. The sentences will run consecutively and hence he has to spend 20 years behind the bars.
