Mangaluru, Feb 22: It is the duty of the society to look after the welfare and protect the human rights of orphaned children, said Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.

Speaking after inaugurating 'A Day with Orphans' free medical checkup for orphaned children organised by Highland Islamic Forum at Highland Educational and Cultural Centre here on Sunday, he said that although Islam gave stress to caring for orphans, no one gave a deeper thought about their welfare.
"In their desire to acquire more wealth, people do not leave alone even assets belonging to orphans. The society today is more concerned about achieving their goals through dubious and unjust means without a thought about the crookedness of their ways. People have forgotten the Prophet's message of keeping one-third part of our body empty, resulting in the staggering amount of illnesses and diseases in the society," he said.
He said that it was not possible to become an ideal Muslim only by performing namaz. There should also be improvement in lifestyle and food habits along with upholding truth, justice and good relations with neighbours, he advised.
District surgeon of Wenlock Hospital Dr Rajeshwari Devi H R said that none of the people were orphans in God's presence. It is the duty of every individual to mould a good future for orphaned children, she said. Highland Islamic Forum president Mohammed Rizwan presided over the inaugural programme. Convenor Ahmed Mohideen, Wenlock Hospital surgeon Dr Julian Saldanha, Qamaruddin, M Ibrahim and others were present.
