Mangalore, Jun 20: Members belonging to the nursing community interacted with the health minister U T Khader and voiced their grievances with the minister during an interaction programme organised by the district unit of Karnataka State Government Nurses Association at the Regional Advanced Pediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) at District Wenlock Hospital here on Friday.

On behalf of the nurses, president of the nurses ' association Bhavani said that the nurses, who took care of patients with utmost care and concern, served them without any raise in their salary or promotions for years. “Most nurses are not given their due although they worked tirelessly with dedication for the betterment of their patients. The government has not considered our request for pay hikes, while we are always at the receiving end when patients and their relatives find lack of facilities and infrastructure in government hospitals,” she conveyed to the minister.

Listening to the nurses ' problems, Mr Khader said that he would address the demands of the association and the nursing community in a meeting with officials representing the association in Bangalore. “Permission has been sought by the health department from Chif Minister Siddaramaiah to fill vacancies of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other posts in government hospitals in the state. The appointments of doctors and other hospital staff will begin soon,” he said, assuring of fulfilling the demands of the nursing community.

He sought nurses ' cooperation to improve the overall health indicators in the state.

On the occasion, three senior nurses – Victoria Janet, Kamala Hoogar, former president of the association and Vishalakshi Jesuman, retiring nursing superintendent – were felicitated and presented with the Florence Nightingale awards by the health minister.
