Kasaragod, Jun 29: Raids by Vigilance Department investigators at the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Kasaragod and Kanhangad have detected gross irregularities in dispatching documents to applicants.

The search carried out as part of a State-wide raid on Saturday found that the officials were not following the norms stipulating that documents, including vehicle registration certificates and licences, should be dispatched only through post.

In case of hand deliveries, officials are bound to keep proper records which, in many instances, was not the case as the registers did not have the mandatory signature, thump impression, and ID card number of the applicant, Vigilance Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Damodaran said.

The simultaneous raids were conducted amidst complaints that documents were illegally handed over to applicants through agencies and middlemen. The nearly five-hour-long search operations that began at noon were led by Vigilance Circle Inspector P. Balakrishnan Nair in Kanhangad and V. Balakrishnan in Kasaragod.

Though the raids did not yield any unaccounted money from the offices, the team seized postal stamps worth Rs.1,400 from a woman employee here, following complaints that officials sold stamps at higher rates to applicants. A detailed report of the raid would be sent to the Vigilance Directorate, Mr. Damodaran said.
