A group of PUC students from a private institution in the city had visited Ullal beach on Monday evening. 19-year-old Obaidullah was one among them.

When a few local miscreants, said to be Bajrang Dal activists, noticed Obaidullah and a girl belonging to Hindu community talking to each other, they surrounded the students and brutally assaulted the Muslim boy. Obaidullah has sustained severe injuries in the attack.

Later the miscreants handed over Obaidullah and the Hindu girl hailing from Moodushedde near Vamanjoor, to the jurisdictional Ullal police. However, Ullal police registered a complaint against the assailants based on a complaint lodged by Obaidullah.

When Sangh Parivar activists threatened to storm Ullal police, the police shifted the duo to another police station in Mangaluru and informed their parents.

Obaidullah’s mother was shell-shocked when she received a call from the police. She immediately hired an auto-rickshaw to meet her son in the police station. However, she suffered a massive heart attack on her way to the police station. The auto-rickshaw driver rushed her to a private hospital, where she breathed her last.

The incident occurred two days after hundreds Sangh Parivar activists prevented students of Mudipu First Grade College in Mangaluru taluk from undertaking an educational trip, claiming that male students from Muslim community formed the “majority” in the group.
