Kundapur, Jun 14: In what can be billed as a rarest of rare incident, a Village Assistant consumed poison in the office citing work pressure and mental torture by higher ups as a reason. The said VA who could not tolerate the fact of being reduced to domestic help for a higher official is now battling for life in a hospital after a failed bid to end his life.

The victim is Mahadevappa Nagappa Nayak (38), a resident of Bhatkal who had been serving as a VA in Bhatkal over the last 20 years.

The victim is said to have been ill-treated by V R P Manohar, who took charge as Assistant Commission recently. It is said that AC has been summoning the VA for domestic work and has been denying even leaves to him. The VA was not even sent on election duty and was instead asked to do the household work by the AC, who has even withheld three months' salary of Mr Nayak.

The said VA hails from economically backward family. Being the eldest son of the family, he has the responsibility to take care of the whole family and when the VA brought this issue to the notice of the Assistant Commissioner, he suspended Mr Nayak on grounds of dereliction of duty.

Unable to retaliate and put up with the torture, Mr Nayak attempted to suicide in his office on Thursday by drinking phenyl.

He is undergoing treatment at Kundapur hospital.

The high-handedness of the AC has been condemned by labour unions and various other organisations.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
