Dakshina Kannada has a history of good voter turnout, with 73.51 per cent of the voters exercising their franchise during the previous gram panchayat elections (2010).

Though no large-scale malpractices were reported in the district during the run-up to the polls, there were a few minor complaints, including allegations of political parties carrying out the campaign on party-lines, which is prohibited by law.

The administration has ensured adequate security, particularly at booths categorised as sensitive and hyper sensitive, said Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim. The district has 880 polling booths of which 65 have been classified as naxal-prone, 139 as hyper sensitive, 216 as sensitive and 460 as normal.

As many as 2,700 police personnel have been deployed for security arrangements, according to Superintendent of Police S.D. Sharanappa. He said as many as 61 mobile sector squads and 10 supervisory mobile squads would keep tab on the poll process even as polling would be video recorded in select polling booths.

Udupi

Voting is underway in 837 polling booths across the Udupi district district.

There are as many as 697523 voters in the district, of which 365042 are men and 332186 are women. 25 are transgender. The voters list being considered follows the enrolment till May 18. In Udupi taluk, there are 311380 voters, of which 147950 are men and 163422 are women and eight transgender. In Karkala, there are 140018 voters, of which 66360 are men and 73658 are women.

Tight security arrangements have been made at 54 polling booths in Maoist areas in Udupi. K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, told presspersons here that there were 27 polling booths each in Maoist areas in Kundapur and Karkala taluks.

“Since there were reports of naxalites being spotted in Chikkamagaluru district last month, we have taken maximum security measures. I have visited all 54 polling stations,” he said.

As many as 1,450 policemen and officers have been deployed for 837 polling booths in the district. This includes police personnel from Kerala, Bengaluru and Shivamogga.

Parties of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Home Guards were also helping the police. A few striking parties too were on the standby. There was a tight vigil on hyper-sensitive booths in the district, Mr. Annamalai said.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
