Thirthahalli, Nov 4: A death note recovered by police has further deepened the mystery surrounding the death of Nandita, a 14-year-old girl, whose tragic end triggered communal clashes in the relatively peaceful town of Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district.

Even though Sangh Parivar and parents of the Class 8 girl, who breathed her last at a private hospital in Manipal on October 31, strongly argue that the she was abducted and poisoned by three men belonging to a different community, the death note suggested that she had decided to end the life.

A senior police officer, who is part of the special investigation team, said on condition of anonymity that they have found the suicide note in one of the notebooks of Nandita. “As part of the investigation, the police collected Nandita's school bag and clothes. The police have found a suicide note in one of the notebooks in her bag,” the officer said.

Surprisingly, in the note, the girl said she was taking the extreme step as she was dejected by her poor academic performance. “The girl also apologized to her parents and requested them to ensure that her young sister was given good education,” said the officer adding that the police would not come to any hasty conclusion at this juncture.

Rumours and theories

The circumstances that led to the tragic death of Nandita and subsequent developments have fuelled various kinds of rumours and theories:

Theory 1: A section of people argue that the Nandita was kidnapped by the three men in car on October 29. The kidnappers raped, poisoned and dumped the girl at Anandagiri area near Thirthahalli. A few local residents, who noticed the girl lying on the ground informed her parents, who came to the spot and took the girl home. In the evening the health condition of the girl worsened and she started vomiting.

Theory 2: When medical reports brushed aside the rumours of sexual assault on the girl, the above theory slightly changed. They began to argue that the girl was kidnapped by three persons, who forced her to drink juice laced with sedatives and attempted to rape her but could not succeed. However, her health condition deteriorated because of a reaction of the sedatives.

Theory 3: Another section of people argue that the girl was neither abducted nor raped. On October 29 instead of going to school the girl boarded a car in which her male friend and two others were present. Later she was spotted talking with her male friend by some people, who threatened the boy and scolded the girl before handing her over to her parents. The parents “advised” the girl not to meet the particular boy again. Unable to bear this “humiliation” the girl consumed poison at home.

However, in her death note' the girl did not blame. Instead, she apologized to her parents for unknown reason. Police said they were investigating the case from all angles.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
