Mangaluru, May 8: In an embarrassment for the Bhartiya Jantata Party, the aggrieved family members of a slain whistleblower, who was also a BJP activist, have taken the party supromo to the task for deliberately trying trivialize and cover up the murder case just because the accused belonged to Sangh Parivar.

Vinayak Baliga, who had raised voice against corruption in a temple management committee, was hacked to death on March 21, 2016 in broad daylight in the city by alleged Hindutva activists. Naresh Shenoy, a city based businessman and founder of NaMo Brigade is the prime accused in the case.

Anuradha Baliga and Harsha Baliga, two sisters of the slain activist, have sent an open letter to the BJP National President Amit Shah, demanding answers to questions related to their brother’s murder.

Three unanswered questions

1) Vinayak Baliga was a Hindu and also a BJP activist. Why his name was missing in the list of slain Hindu activists prepared by the BJP ?

2) BJP staged violent protests whenever a Hindu was murdered by unknown miscreants. Vinayak Baliga was a well-known RTI activists and BJP worker. Why the BJP chose to ignore his brutal killing instead of protesting?

3) The 88-year-old father of Vinayak Baliga is fighting for justice. Why the BJP leaders failed to come to his aid?

Anuradha, speaking to media persons here, also sought to know why either Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel or any other BJP office-bearer had not visited the aggrieved family even once, to express their condolences or support to the family, despite victim being a staunch party worker.

Harsha said that during a recent programme in the city she had asked BJP national spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi why the BJP had been supporting the murder suspect instead of supporting the Vinayak’s case.  To this poser, the Lekhi had avoided answering the question, terming it a local issue. The Baliga family also sought an explanation from the party chief on the same issue.

Narendra Nayak, a city based rationalist and activist, along with the Baliga sisters produced a response by one BJP minister who wrote to the Karnataka Home secretary urging him to constitute a special investigation team to go into the causes behind the murder.

The names of Vedavyas Kamath, who is contesting the May 12 Karnataka assembly polls on the BJP candidate from Mangaluru City South and his associate Naresh Shenoy are mentioned in the letter.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
