Mangaluru, Sept 25: M K Faizy, the national president of the Social Democratic Party of India has said that his party would be part of the proposed Mahagathbandhan to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing media persons in the city, he said that the party has been campaigning against the Narendra Modi-led BJP Government’s policies and actions that was dividing people on communal lines. He said that a united front of parties alone was the way to prevent the BJP from coming back to power next year.

Asked whether the SDPI will be given seats to contest in the Mahagathbandhan, Mr. Faizy said that it was too premature. “At present, talks are still on and the Mahagathbandhan is still in the making. We expect parties to keep aside their egos and form an united opposition,” he said. Regardless of whether they get seats to contest or not, SDPI will be part of the united front and it will not lose its political identity by being part of it.

Brushing aside the perception that SDPI was a party supporting a communal group of a particular section of society, Mr. Faizy said that the SDPI was fighting for the rights of a particular community as a large number of party supporters were from that community. “But the party has been an advocate of harmonious living and has never spoken against any religion. For us, the interest of the country stands foremost,” he said. On the issue of triple talaq, Mr. Faizy said that by passing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance 2018, the Union government has criminalised an issue which was civil in nature. There are a lot of infirmities in the Ordinance, he said.

SDPI vice-president Sharfuddin Ahmed said that it was highly questionable of the BJP, which claims to be a champion of Uniform Civil Code, to come out with a community-specific Ordinance.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
