Mangaluru, Nov 27: That Mangaluru is known for wine culture is known to many. It reached a new high with the maiden three-day Mangaluru Wine Festival at Kadri Park here, off to a rousing response on Saturday.
Karnataka Wine Board is targetting the people in the coastal region, after successfully hosting the fest at some major cities like Mysuru and?Bengaluru to name a few.
A stall of Sula Vineyards Private Ltd from Nasik in neighbouring Maharashtra sold 28 bottles of red wine of two domestic brands alone in a few hours – Sula Chenin Blanc and Sula Cabernet Shiraz with a MRP of Rs 625 and Rs 705 respectively.
Leave aside the other brands as they had a mix of both domestic and foreign made on offer totalling over 40 brands. Among foreign-made wines,Mud House' from New?Zealand is the costliest priced at Rs 2,100 per bottle of 750 ML, followed byHardys' from Australia,Ruffino' from Italy,Trapiche' from Argentina to name a few.
Among domestic brands,Sula Rasa' named after the?managing director of the vineyards Rajiv Savant is the pick, said a sales man, who wants to add a few more to the existing stock as the response is good.
Ashok Govekar, sales in-charge (rest of Karnataka) from Fratelli Vineyards, was proud to share thata doctor came to the stall and ticked his choice among the list and took home 36 bottles at one go. The locals are well aware about the taste and some visit the stall asking for a particular brand'.
He went on to claim that they are the only makers of red and white wine using a particular variety of red grape. Merlot and Sangioverse are of red variety, Sangioverse Bianco is white, he said holding aloft a bottle of wine.
A joint venture of Indian and?Italian company, Fratelli has its vineyards at Vijayapura in the state and also in Maharashtra.
Valle De Indies from Bengaluru has various collections that included Silver and?Port available in the range of Rs 695, Rs 495, Rs 295, according to its founder director Divyakiran D'Souza.
Rosso wines from Madhugiri in Tumakuru and Grover Zompe Vineyards from Doddaballapur near Bengaluru have also set up stalls.
People young and old alike thronged the park for the mela, unmindful of the entry fee of Rs 20. The sale and consumption of wine is restricted to particular area inside the park. It will be open till Monday from 11 am to 9 pm.
Deputy Director of Horticulture Department H?R?Yogeesha told media: “The vendors have been told to pile up the stock as the crowd is expected to swell on Sunday”.
Minister for Forest B?Ramanath?Rai, chief whip of the government in Legislative Council Ivan D'Souza,?Wine Board Chairman Ravindra Shankar Mirje, member Rukmangada H?R,?Managing Director T?Somu and?Deputy Commissioner of Excise L?A?Manjunath were present at the inaugural session.
