Winning all 8 assembly seats of Dakshina Kannada in 2018 is now BJP's goal

Mangaluru, Jul 2: The new president of Dakshina Kannada district unit of BJP Sanjeeva Matandoor took charge on Saturday setting a goal of capturing all eight assembly constituencies in the coastal district when the assembly election are next held in 2018.

Lauding the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the newly inducted BJP chief vowed to work for the party as a 'Pradhan Sevak' in the district. "We should strive to materialize dreams of our Prime Minister by working sincerely at the booth level. I will work sincerely along with party workers to strenghthen party at the grass root level. We need to inculcate the values of our leaders, who laid the foundation for BJP in Dakshina Kannada district," Sanjeeva said.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said the biggest task for new party president is to win all eight assembly segments in the district in the next assembly election. "We could bag only one out of eight seats in Dakshina Kannada district in the assembly election held in 2013. People started evaluating the result as the downfall of BJP in the district. However, the party regained its strength by retaining the Lok Sabha seat, and winning majority in gram panchayat and zilla panchayat elections that followed later. I am confident that the party will bag all eight assembly constituencies in the district under the leadership of new president," Nalin said.

Quoting Narendra Modi, the MP said days are not far when India will become 'Congress Mukt'. "The achievements of the BJP government led by Narendra Modi will certainly make Karnataka, a 'Congress Mukt' state. Similarly, Dakshina Kannada, which is a hub of Sangh Parivar activities, will also turn towards BJP after the next assembly election results. Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka is in ICU with their own party leaders are up in arms against the leadership. Now it is Congress, which is the main Opposition for Siddaramaiah in the legislature," he ridiculed.

Ganesh Karnik, chief whip of the opposition in the legislative council said the Congress lacks essence in its national ideology. "Congress is under a wrong impression that the state can be developed through several 'Bhagya' schemes and through appeasement of minority. In reality, it is the financial inclusion which is necessary for overall development of a state," he added. Outgoing president Prathap Simha Nayak handed over the party flag to Sanjeeva, who will lead the party for next three years.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

• Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

• STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

• Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
