Mysuru, Jan 10: A mother of six was arrested after she poured petrol and set her husband on fire yesterday after he reportedly decided to marry another woman.

The victim, Mazhar Pasha, 47, who was rushed to a hospital on Monday evening, succumbed to burns on Wednesday evening.

According to Udayagiri police, Pasha, a resident of Satyanagar in Mysuru, is a scrap dealer. He married Mumtaz 25 years ago. The couple has six children. Mumtaz poured petrol on Pasha after a verbal duel on Monday evening.

In her statement, Mumtaz told police that her husband was having an affair and he was getting ready for a second marriage despite her opposition.

“Though the two were married for 25 years, their relationship began to turn sour after Mumtaz got to know about her husband’s affair. Locals and community leaders had counselled the couple. Pasha often threatened his wife and children that he would desert them and marry again. On Monday, Mumtaz set her husband on fire after a heated discussion,” police said.

Mumtaz was arrested after Pasha’s relatives lodged a complaint on Tuesday.

“We will hand over his body to the family after conducting a postmortem. Initially, we had registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC against Mumtaz. Now, we will register a murder case against her,” police added.
