Malappuram, Jan 15: Kanakadurga, who created history by entering the Sabarimalatemple recently, was assaulted by her relatives when she returned to her husband’s home on Tuesday.

According to police, Kanakadurga was beaten up by her mother-in-law by a wooden plank. She was taken to the Government District Hospital at Perinthalmanna in the Malappuram district of Kerala after she suffered minor injuries to head in the assault. Perinthalmanna police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

On January 2, Kanakadurga, native of Perinthalmanna, along with Kozhikode native Bindu Ammini, entered the Sabarimala temple under police protection, after making a failed attempt on December 24. After their temple visit, two women had gone into hiding due to threats. Kanakadurga, who is working with Civil Supplies outlet in Perinthalamanna, returned home as her leave period came to an end on Tuesday.

Kanakadurga, who is from an orthodox Nair family in Areekode in the district, had drawn the ire of her relatives for her visit to Sabarimala. In the second week of December Kanakadurga left her husband’s home at Angadippuram to attend a meeting at Thiruvananthapuram. On December 24, she attempted to visit Sabarimala along with Bindu. But they were forced to abandon their trip due to strong protests from a section of devotees at Pamba and Sannidhanam.

The family of Kanakadurga was not aware of her plan to visit the hill shrine. As there was no information about her after her failed attempt, the family was frequently contacting police to know her whereabouts. After her successful entry into the temple on January 2, her brother Bharathbhushan had alleged a conspiracy involving CPM leaders and police behind her visit.
