Women wearing gold should be careful while walking on the roads: SP

Manipal, Dec 6: Udupi Superintendent of Police K Annamalai has expressed concern over increasing number of chain snatching cases in the district.

Addressing media persons here, he said that women wearing gold ornaments should be careful while walking on the roads. The snatcher who wanted to snatch the chain would drive once on the road to check the woman and what she was wearing.

It was only during the second time he would snatch the chain. It would be better if women were alert and walked on the extreme side of the path than near the road, making it difficult to snatch chain.

It was essential that women called the police control room immediately after such incidents snatching as it would help them track the culprits. But the police normally got the information nearly one-and-a-half hours after the incident, which gave enough time for them to escape.

People with independent houses leaving the town for long visits should inform the police so that the latter could keep an eye on the houses.

Public cooperation

The SP said that public caution and cooperation could go a long way in preventing crime in the society. He was speaking at the inaugural function of Crime Prevention Month organised by the district police, here.

Mr. Annamalai said that though the Crime Prevention Month was being celebrated in December, crime prevention was a daily routine for the police. While the population of the State was 6.25 crore, the strength of the police personnel was 1.1 lakh.

This meant that there was one policeman for about 1,000 persons.

A good State would have a crime detection rate from 60 per cent to 70 per cent. This meant that even in States with good detection rate, about 25 per cent of cases were going unsolved, he added. The Udupi district police had spent Rs. 1 crore on detection of cases in 2014 alone. The police personnel had to be sent different districts or states to detect cases.

Air India Express brings back Mangaluru–Muscat direct flights from March 2026

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
