
Minister for Urban Development and Udupi district-in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the unit after participating in Karnataka Rajyotsava celebration.
The unit will provide treatment, police and legal help and counselling facility to women who have faced atrocities. The unit will function from four rooms at the hospital.
Members of non governmental organisations will be available around-the-clock to provide counselling and the unit is also connected to the women's helpline number: 1091.
It will be manned by a medical officer, two women police officers and four nurses.
The medical officer for the unit is yet to be appointed. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sorake said that atrocities on women were on the rise in the country.
This made the unit all the more necessary at the District Government Hospital.
Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, S.S. Pattanashetti, Deputy Commissioner, Kumara, Additional Deputy Commissioner, were present.
