Yeddyurappa claims he wasn’t present when comments on speaker were made

Bengaluru, Feb 13: The drama over the alleged poaching audio clip continued for the second consecutive day in the legislative assembly on Tuesday with both the opposition and ruling parties agreeing to a probe into the issue. However, both sides differed on the mode of inquiry.

While the BJP continued to press for a judicial probe or a House committee to inquire into the contents of the audio clip, the government said it cannot go back on the speaker KR Ramesh Kumar’s suggestion for a special investigation team to look into the issue. Finally, on the suggestion of opposition leader BS Yeddyurappa, the speaker decided to convene a meeting in his chambers on Wednesday to try and find a way to resolve the issue.

Earlier, Yeddyurappa presented his defence on the clip, in which he is heard trying to convince Sharanagouda, son of Gurmitkal JD(S) MLA Naganagouda Kandakur, to get his father to resign. Shivangouda Naik, a BJP MLA, is also party to the conversation. Yeddyurappa said he was “woken up from his sleep” at 12.30am and asked to meet Sharanagouda at the inspection bungalow in Devadurga.

“However, I reiterate that if it is proved I was present when anything was said that the speaker was paid Rs 50 crore during my conversation with the JD(S) MLA’s son, then I will quit politics,” Yeddyurappa said.

The former chief minister blamed chief minister HD Kumaraswamy for having defamed the speaker’s name by releasing the audio clip even before informing Kumar about the incident. “If you had an iota of respect for the chair, you would not have released the CD before speaking to the speaker,” Yeddyurappa said. He said Kumaraswamy was “accused No 1” in the incident and claimed the CM should have advised Sharangouda not to meet anyone as soon as the latter brought it to his notice.

“I believe Kumaraswamy is the main accused in the case as he has misrepresented the facts by editing the actual video of 40 minutes to only two minutes, releasing a fake audio and trying to use this fake audio for a political conspiracy,” Yeddyurappa said.

The opposition leader, who has been accused by the ruling coalition of attempting to topple the government, said Kumaraswamy was using the speaker to save his chair. “Already there is brewing dissidence in the Congress with more than 20 MLAs from that party having reinforced the view that they will not accept you as their CM,” he said.

Rebutting the charges levelled by Yeddyurappa, Kumaraswamy said even if he is the prime accused in the case then it has to be proved by an investigating agency. “As far editing of the clip goes, you (BJP) could not digest the two-minute audio, how will you digest the 40-minute audio?” asked a sarcastic Kumaraswamy.

Kumaraswamy accused the BJP of being senseless in trying to lure Kandakur as the latter was a family friend of the Deve Gowda family for the past 50 years.

On the accusations of Congress legislators having rejected his leadership as CM, Kumaraswamy said: “The bond between Siddaramaiah and the Congress MLAs is strong as they all worked under him over the last five years. Obviously, the MLAs’ loyalty lies with Siddaramaiah. There is no harm in that.”

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
