Yenepoya Foundation distributes academic excellence awards

Mangaluru, Nov 12: Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra has said that uplifting minorities and marginalized classes in the field of education is need of the hours.

Speaking at the Yenepoya Academic Excellence Awards distribution ceremony organised by the Yenepoya Foundation and Yenepoya University on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday he said that scholarships always encourage students.

Lauding the Yenepoya group for its gesture towards providing education to the minorities and economically weaker sections, Mr. Jayachandra said as the Law Minister, he was thinking of encouraging educational institutions across the State to adopt similar gestures.

The Minister said the gesture of the Yenepoya group qualified as corporate social responsibility. Other institutions should emulate the move, he said. Mr. Jayachandra further said he would rectify the anomalies in rules and regulations pertaining to minority educational institutions. The awards are being given by the Foundation for many years for students and institutions of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod districts.

This year, 305 students and 14 institutions received the award and the cash prize ranges from Rs. 3,000 to Rs.10,000 with a total outlay of Rs. 11 lakh, said the university.

Students, irrespective of caste or religion, are awarded for scoring highest marks in SSLC, PUC and undergraduate courses. A few minority community institutions scoring 100 per cent result too got the award.

The Foundation also sponsors five each seats in MBBS, BDS, B.Sc (Nursing) and BPT, MPT and GNM courses in its colleges for students from undivided Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 lakh every year, with one seat each meant for orphans nominated by orphanages.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
