Mangaluru, Sep 6: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has assured that arrangements would be made to provide water in coastal Karnataka by building check-dams at regular intervals under Paschima Vahini project as an alternative for the Yettinahole River, which is expected to be diverted to other districts, said health minister U T Khader.

UT Khader3

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Puttur, he maintained that the Yettinahole project had been given approval by the cabinet and the tender process had begun when BJP leader DV Sadananda Gowda was the chief minister and there was no role of the Congress government in implementing the project.

PU score

Mr Khader said that the attention of the state government would be drawn to consider 50 percent of marks obtained in PUC and the other 50 percent based on CET results, as criteria for admission to vocational and ITI courses.

Despite securing good percentage in II PUC examinations, students from rural areas are unable to secure good seats in vocational courses owing to average CET results. While there are separate coaching centres for CET in cities, there is no such coaching available in rural areas. Hence, talented students are deprived from entering into medical and engineering professions.

To counter this, the higher education minister has been urged to prepare a proposal to consider PUC marks for vocational courses and send it to the government, he said.

Health camp deaths

When asked about the delay in receiving the medical investigation report on deaths of two persons who attended a health camp in Panaje in Puttur in March 2015, the minister said that he would discuss the matter with the district health officer and question the delay in receiving the report. Efforts will be made to procure the medical report shortly and take appropriate action based on the findings in the report, he assured.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
