Mangaluru/Udupi, 20: Sporadic clashes and untoward incidents were reported during the polling for the Zilla and Taluk panchayats in twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.
District administrations and police units in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi declared that the election was peaceful barring a few untoward incidents. Here is a list of unfortunate incidents:
- A booth level officer at the polling station set up in Golthamajalu gram panchayat office in Bantwal taluk slipped into deep sleep during the voting process. Identified as Mahabaleshwara Bhat, the officer had allegedly misbehaved with a few voters in the morning. However in the afternoon he was found sleeping. A few voters took his photo using mobile phones and shared on WhatsApp.

- A mild verbal spat took place between fisheries minister K Abhayachandra Jain and BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari near a polling booth at Borugudde village near Moodbidri. Even though initially Mr Jain tried to ignore Mr Adhikari, later began to respond to his taunts. Mr Jain visited several polling stations in and around Moodbidri to observe the situation.
- People in Shamihaklu and Golikadu villages in Kundapur taluk boycotted the election in protest against the failure of consecutive governments to provide basic amenities like proper roads, electricity and drinking water etc. Most of the people in these two villages belong to scheduled castes and tribes.
- People in Mutlupady in Andaru, a Naxal-affected area in Karkala taluk also boycotted elections. Only officials and security personnel visited the polling station set up in Moodudarkas of Mutlupady. Not a single voter from this SC/ST dominant hamlet exercised his/her franchise. The reason for the boycott was the failure of successive governments to provide basic facilities to villagers.

- Unidentified miscreants damaged the car of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Jagadish Shenava when he visited a polling station at Addoor along with his supporters in the morning. Prior to this a heated exchange of words between Mr Shenava and local Congress leader Mohammed Ashraf created a tense atmosphere in the area for some time.

- A minor clash broke out between the activists of two parties at a polling station near Pudu village. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. More details are awaited.
