Mangaluru, Apr 5: Muslim leaders and activists of Congress party in Mangaluru on Wednesday indirectly endorsed the demands of Popular Front of India over the custodial torture of a youth and subsequent police action against protesters in the city.

Former MLC and Muslim Central Committee president K S Mohammed Masood, Former Mangaluru Mayor and president of United Muslims Organisation K Ashraf among others attended the meeting held at Zeenath Baksh Auditorium, here. Several Congress corporators from Mangaluru City Corporation and members of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat and taluk panchayats of the district were also part of the meeting.

The development comes a day after PFI activists were canned while protesting in front of Mangaluru City Police Commissioner’s office against alleged police atrocity on a Muslim youth, identified as Ahmed Qureshi from Katipalla, who was arrested in connection with a murder attempt case. The youth is in a critical condition.

The participants of the meeting set a 15 deadline for the police department and the government to fulfil their various demands including compensation to the victim of custodial torture and action against policemen who tortured him.

They also demanded immediate transfer of the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar and dissolution of the current team of City Crime Branch of the Mangaluru City Police.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ashraf said that if their demands were not met, another meeting will be called after 15 days to take a decision on their next move.

He went on to claim that the CCB officers in Mangaluru are known for their injustice and double standard. Hence, the entire CCB team should be dissolved and form a new team comprising honest and impartial officers, he added. Interestingly, most of the above demands have already been put forth by the leaders of PFI and SDPI.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
