Malappuram, Jul 25: Tens of thousands of Sunni believers attended a mammoth prayer congregation at Swalat Nagar near here on Thursday evening anticipating Lailathul Qadr, the night that is believed by Muslims to be holier than 1,000 months.
The sprawling grounds of Swalat Nagar at Muttippaditurned into a sea of humanity as thousands of Sunni believers converged there.
The mega prayer congregation took a pledge against terrorism and welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution to launch an investigation into the Israeli offensive on Gaza. They prayed for global peace and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine.
All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliar inaugurated the meet. Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama treasurer Sayed Ali Bafaqi Thangal presided.
Delivering the keynote address, Madin chairman Sayed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari called upon the people to strengthen their inner life. “God has given man the power and insight to choose his course of life. God has also given man the attribute of knowledge in an abstract form. This is the divine trust that man has assumed. We have to fortify this trust and work for humanity. Ramzan is the best time to strengthen the inner beauty of human life,” he said.
Mr Bukhari led various prayers such as Thouba, Tahleel, Swalat and Qat'mul Qur'an.
The programme began with an Ihthikaf session in the morning, followed by several sessions on Quran and Hadith. A mass Iftar was held at the grounds. Hundreds of believers attended the obligatory prayers of Magrib and Isha, followed by Tharaveeh, Avvabeen, Vitr and other prayers.
Elaborate arrangements were made for the prayer meet. Traffic along the route was diverted.
Several delegates from countries such as Australia, the U.K., Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and from the Gulf attended the meeting.
