Mangalore, Jan 18: The National Executive Council of Popular Front of India has declared February 17 as Popular Front Day.  It was on this date that Popular Front of India was dedicated to the people of India as a national organisation in the historic Empower India Conference held at Bangalore in 2007. The new national organisation Popular Front was formed by merging three state organisations that were working in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Popular Front members and well wishers all over the country will celebrate this foundation day as Popular Front Day with various programmes on February 17, 2013.   This practice will be followed on the same day in the succeeding years also.

On Popular Front Day, Flag hoisting will be held at every unit level and each district committee will organise a rally named as Unity March, followed by a public meeting.

This year Popular Front Day will highlight the theme “Together for People's Rights” through pamphlets, posters and public addresses.  The neo-liberal economic policies being adopted by the government and the intervention of neo-colonial powers in our internal affairs have put to perils the basic needs and fundamental rights of Indian citizens.  In spite of claims of development boom, people are largely denied free access even to drinking water and they are left at the mercy of corporate profit mongers for basic needs like food, fuel, cloth and shelter.  The National Executive Council of Popular Front has called upon its members, associates, well-wishers and public to convey this message of united action for people's rights on the occasion of Popular Front Day.

The past 5 years since the launching of the organisation at the national level, witnessed its entry in to most of the states in west, north and north-east of India. The membership and number of units also have shown tremendous increase.  Popular Front headquarters was shifted from Bangalore to New   Delhi. Popular Front has brought to the forefront through various campaigns,  issues like menace of communal fascism, gaining political empowerment of marginalised classes, providing  reservation in education and employment,  stopping atrocities against dalits, tribals and minorities,  repealing black laws, ending illegal detentions,  reconstruction of Babri Masjid etc.

Mangaluru, Mar 28: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP has warned the individuals and political parties against the poll code violations during private events.

“Private events such as marriages, birthdays, housewarming ceremonies, and other non-political programmes do not require any permission. However, one should ensure that there is no violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) at these functions. Permission is needed if the events are attended by politicians or candidates,” the DC said.

He said that these gatherings will be under the surveillance of MCC teams, as there are chances of luring voters by campaigning and supplying food, said the DC. The district has 38,386 new voters, of which, 19,619 are men.

He said that the notification of election in Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency will be issued soon, and the filing of nominations will be held between 11 am and 3 pm till April 4.

Only five persons, including the candidate, will be allowed to enter the returning officer’s chamber to submit the nominations. A facilitation centre will be opened at the DC’s office.

The expenditure of the candidate will be counted from the day the candidate files the nomination.

The DC said that the district is not an expenditure-sensitive constituency. Assistant expenditure observers and expenditure observers will monitor the expenditure of the candidates. An expenditure book will be provided to the candidate to record expenditure incurred, he explained.

Further, he said that no election materials can be printed without the name and address of the publishers, and the number of copies printed. Separate permission should be availed for procession prior to the submission of nomination papers from the ARO office, through the single-window system.
