Mangalore, Jul 16: Students of various polytechnic colleges in Mangalore participated in a demonstration organised by the district unit of All College Students Association (ACSA) in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday, protesting against the Vishwesharaiah Technological University (VTU) for the cancellation of a favourable carry-over system in polytechnic courses.

As per the latest decision of the Directorate of Technical Education, a student who had failed in five or more subjects was not qualified to be admitted to the third or fifth semester from the academic year 2013-14. The association wanted the higher education minister to amend the regulations set by the VTU and allow diploma students to continue their studies even if they had failed in 20 subjects.

State president and legal advisor of the union Dinaker Shetty said that the students would lose precious years if the problem was not rectified. He said that a memorandum would be sent to the Department of Higher Education in the state.

The protest was led by union president Rameeth Kumar, district president Uttam Alva and leaders Deekshith, Sachin Bangera, Shreelatha, Vinaya, Lohith Kumar, Karishma Ullal, Ashwith Kottary, Prakash Kaushik, Prateek and Nithin Mada.
