Karnataka CM Yields to pressure, reallocates portfolios to ministers

Bengaluru, Jan 22: A day after some ministers threw a tantrum over their portfolios, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday reallocated some of them in yet another minor rejig to mollify his Cabinet colleagues.

MTB Nagaraj, who was unhappy with the Excise portfolio, has been given Municipal Administration and Sugar. The Excise portfolio will now be headed by K Gopalaiah. 

Medical Education Minister J C Madhuswamy has also been given the charge of Haj and Wakf. Forest Minister Aravind Limbavali got Kannada & Culture additionally. 

The state’s new Horticulture and Sericulture minister will be R Shankar. On Thursday, Yediyurappa had given Horticulture and Sugar to Gopalaiah. 

Youth Empowerment & Sports Minister K C Narayana Gowda is also in charge of Planning, Programme Monitoring & Statistics, a portfolio that was with Yediyurappa. 

On Thursday, Nagaraj complained that he would have “nothing to do” as Excise minister. Similarly, Gopalaiah and Gowda were not happy with the portfolios they got. Madhuswamy was miffed that the minor irrigation portfolio was taken from him.

Mangaluru, Feb 24: The Cyber Crime police officials have arrested four persons in connection with several cases of ATM skimming in the city on Wednesday.

Police identified the detained individuals as Gladwin Jinto Joy alias Juntu (37) of Thrissur in Kerala, Dinesh Singh Rawat (44) of Delhi, Rahul TS (24) of Alappuzha in Kerala and Abdul Mazeed (27) of Kasargod district in Kerala.

Police have also seized skimming device, two cars, fake ATM cards, five mobile phones and two Apple watches from the accused. The value of the seized goods has been estimated at Rs 25 lakhs.

It may be recalled here that as many as 22 ATM skimming cases have been reported from the city in the recent past.

Mangaluru, Feb 27: Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister K C Narayana Gowda said that a hi-tech fish park will be set up in Mangaluru for the production of fish products.

Speaking after chairing a review meeting, he said that there is a need to ensure that fish are not spoiled using cold storage facilities. Using the technology, fish chips and pickles need to be prepared. A land near Fisheries College has been identified for the purpose. The minister said that all the pending works in the department should be completed by March-end.

It has come to my notice during my visit to various districts that funds under MPLAD and MLALAD have remained unutilised. I have directed the officials to accelerate the works. Works worth Rs 26 crore are pending for completion in Dakshina Kannada.

Stating that a girls' sports hostel near Mangala Stadium in Mangaluru has been sanctioned, the minister said that in the interest of the safety of female students, rooms with attached toilets should be constructed.

The department is ready to release additional funds. Already Rs 1.50 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose. "We have sought additional funds under 'Khelo India Khelo' scheme from the Centre,” he said.

He said sports talents will be supported under the 'Khelo India' concept of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Efforts will be made to provide employment to those who have performed exceptionally well in sports. “I will hold a discussion with the Chief Minister in this regard," he added.

Puttur, Mar 4: Two labourers lost their lives when a mound of mud fell on them while they were working in a chicken waste pit in Dakshina Kannada district today morning.

The deceased have been identified as Ravi (24) and Babu (34), residents of Parkala Colony, Panaje village.

The incident occurred near Arlapadavu in Puttur taluk of the coastal district of Karnataka. 

It is reported that the labourers were trying to repair the pipe in which waste of chicken was being dumped. However, the fell into it as the pipe got broken. 

As the excavator was also digging mud nearby, the mud slid and fell into the pit burying them alive. 

Even though the sleuths from jurisdictional Sampya rural police rushed to the spot and began a rescue operation, they could only find the dead body under the mud.
