Mangalore, August 22: A special park for women 'Vanitha Vana', a first of its kind in the city was inaugurated by Krishna J Palemar, District-In-Charge minister at Hat Hill, near Lal Bagh here on Monday.
Speaking after inaugurating the park, Mr Palemar said that initiatives such as the park will contribute for the preservation of nature in the city area.
He said that the government will open this kind of parks all across the state, depending on the success of Vanitha Van. He also informed that a park exclusively for men was under consideration.
The park, located on 1.5 acres of land, is expected to see more development in the future. In the second phase, various works, including construction of toilets and a radio house, would be undertaken at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.
The park at Hathill was selected because vehicular movement to the park is restricted and traffic density is also less, despite it being located in the heart of the city.
Since Mangalore has no park exclusively for women, it will be a place where women can relax without being conscious about oglers. The park will also act as a stress buster for women who would like to spend some time alone.
The park received ample donations for its development from the funds of public representatives on the first day as Mr Palemar, Mangalore South MLA Yogish Bhat and Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel pledged to contribute Rs 2 lakh each from their funds.
Praveen Anchan, Mayor, Mangalore City Corporation, Geetha Nayak, Deputy Mayor, Dr K N Vijayprakash, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat were also present.
