Mangaluru, Oct 11: Despite the fact that the construction work of the Padil-Bajal road under railway bridge was undertaken at a fast-pace over the past few months, the facility is nowhere close to being ready for use.
It is still unclear when the underpass will be completed and opened for the use of commuters.
The water-logging of the underpass with rainwater and drainage water has mostly led to the delay incompletion of the project. This delay has resulted in lack of a connecting road from the railway crossing at Padil to areas located further such as Bajal, Veeranagar and Vijayanagar and a hindrance to construct proper drainage system along these areas.
The completion of the construction project initiated at an estimated budget of nearly Rs 6 crore, including land acquisition, is expected to be delayed by a few months.
Since the drainage system pertaining to Veeranagar and Vijaynagar passes through land belonging to the railway department, it is not possible for the city corporation to undertake the construction of proper drains.
The Mangaluru City Corporation needs to acquire land if the construction of a proper drainage system has to be undertaken, which will require an inordinate amount of time to be completed if it is taken up.
Speaking on the delay in completion of the road work, local resident R K Devadiga said that the delay had caused a lot of inconvenience to the people living in the surrounding areas. The underpass has been clogged with water from the past three months which might result in a spurt of deadly diseases among locals due to the stagnant water.
Work on the road under bridge should be hastened and the city corporation should actively participate in the construction of a proper drainage system along the road passing the Padil-Bajal road under railway bridge, he said.
