Groom-to-be run over by lorry after car knocks down scooter; car driver caught by locals

Mangaluru, Jul 11: A youth was run over by a lorry after a speeding car knocked his two-wheeler down on Netravati Bridge near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today.

The deceased has been identified as Ubaid (28), a resident of Bandikotya in Ullal. According to sources, he was recently engaged and was supposed to get married on July 23.

Shakir, who was with Ubaid on the two-wheeler suffered serious injuries. He was shifted to a private hospital for treatment. 

The car hit the two-wheeler when the two were heading back to Ullal from Mangaluru. 

The impact of the collision was such that Ubaid was thrown on to the road. Within a second a speeding lorry crushed him to death on the spot. 

The car driver sped away after the mishap instead of stopping to help the accident victims. However, local residents chased the car and waylaid it near Thokkotty flyover. 

The car was reportedly driven by Krishna, who works at Someshwar municipality office. He had reportedly purchased the car just two days ago. Police have taken him into custody along with another person who was also on board the car.

Traffic south police have registered a hit-and-run case and investigations are on.

Bengaluru, Nov 25: Karnataka government on Wednesday appointed retired director of the Department of Information N Bhrungeesh as media advisor to the Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa.

In an order issued here for his appointment from immediate effect.

He serviced as media secretary to Mr Yeddiyurappa earlier as well.

Bengaluru, Dec 5: New cases at 1,247 outnumbered 877 recoveries on a day across Karnataka, taking its Covid tally to a whopping 8,90,360, including 25,046 active cases till Thursday, said the state health bulletin on Friday.

“With 877 discharged from the hospitals across the southern state in the last 24 hours, recoveries rose to 8,53,461, while 13 succumbed to the infection, taking the state’s death toll to 11,834 so far,” said the bulletin in a statement here.

Accounting for about 50 per cent of the cases, Bengaluru registered 620 fresh cases, taking its Covid tally to 3,72,582, including 19,268 active cases, while recoveries rose to 3,49,143, with 282 discharged in the last 24 hours.

The virus claimed eight lives across the city, taking its death toll to 4,170 till date.

Of the 287 patients in the intensive care units (ICUs), 153 are in Bengaluru hospitals, 14 each in Chamarajanagara and Tumakuru, 13 in Hassan and 10 in Kalaburagi.

Out of 98,049 tests conducted on Thursday, 11,305 were through rapid antigen detection and 86,744 through RT-PCR.

“The positivity rate was 1.27 per cent and the case fatality rate 1.04 per cent for the day across the state,” added the bulletin.

Bengaluru, Nov 28: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s relative and personal assistant N.R. Santhosh allegedly attempts to commit suicide on Friday evening.

Santhosh, 32-year-old and resident of Dollar’s Colony Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said, “Doctors stated that he is responding to the medications. He is still not out of danger completely. We are hoping for the best.”

A senior staff member of the CM office said on the condition of anonymity that Santhosh was upset over family issues and reportedly swallowed about a dozen sleeping pills with an intention of committing suicide. “Reason for this action was clearly not yet known and the police are yet to register the case,” the officer added.
